Nevada Mountain Ranges, by George Wherthner Last viewed: Dec 09, 2009, 06:12:06 AM (GMT)
Winnemucca, NV--This book is a slick, glossy update to McLane's Silent Cordilleras. It cribs a lot of McLane's research, but also adds much that's of great value. Considering that Wherthner took all the beautiful photos as well as did all the writing, this book has to be considered a major accomplishment.
One of my favorite parts so far (I've only just started it) comes in the third paragraph when Wherthner describes Nevada as "Poor Man's Alaska." That's about right.
Wherthner also seems to get it about right when he writes:
The sense of freedom and quietude one feels looking out from a peak across range after range disappearing into vast distance--that is Nevada's hidden mother lode. On a clear day, visibility may exceed 200 miles!
Great stuff. It reminded me of my 'Net geek pal Brian's description of "line of sight" as being one of Nevada's "best natural resources." He was talking about wireless networking, of course. ;-)top | |
